The way many Initiative 71 marijuana-gifting services get around the restriction on sales is to sell something else, like a T-shirt, some juice, or a piece of digital art. Federal regulations or legislation may allow for Washington DC recreational weed dispensaries to open in the future, but for now, we just have I-71. Residents can buy their DC weed with a medical card or obtain it through the gifting system. Also, you are only allowed to possess two ounces or less at a time. Recreational marijuana in Washington DC is legal to possess, consume, and gift-though, in order to use weed in DC, you must be over the age of 21 and only do so on private property. That’s why we’ve created this handy guide on how to buy weed in DC. However, it can be a bit different if you’re not used to it. It may have happened in a roundabout way, but I-71 has quickly created a thriving market for cannabis in DC. For now, I-71-compliant shops are the closest thing to a weed dispensary that DC is going to get. So does DC have recreational dispensaries? Well, according to the law, it doesn’t. These shops sell items or experiences other than weed, but just so happen to give weed away as a free gift with your purchase. This has led to the so-called gray market of weed shops in DC. While the sale of recreational marijuana remains illegal, there’s a bit of a gray area when it comes to giving it away as a gift. However, after I-71 legalized the possession of marijuana, Congress quickly placed a rider on the annual budget that banned the commercialization of cannabis. The ballot measure, officially known as the Legalization of Possession of Minimal Amounts of Marijuana for Personal Use Initiative of 2014, passed with an overwhelming majority and went into effect the following year. If you want to know why buying weed in DC can be so complicated these days, it all goes back to Initiative 71 (I-71). Check with a lawyer to be certain of your rights to grow, buy, carry, and consume weed in our nation’s capital. Disclaimer: Gentleman Toker doesn’t provide legal advice.

A rather diverse group to be sure, but all eminent in their own ways. The ceremony itself was surreal: besides Yes, the other inductees were Electric Light Orchestra, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam, Tupac Shakur, and Nile Rodgers for a lifetime achievement award. As the kids say, it was on like Donkey Kong. Lee’s participation a few days before the ceremony. Geddy Lee has been on the record for years speaking of Yes’ influence on him as a bassist, and Yes drummer Alan White appeared to confirm Mr. Hours later, Rush’s management hastily stuffed the cat back INTO the bag, but it was too perfect. What if Geddy stepped in to fill Squire’s role and played bass with Yes? The answer turned out to be, of course, “Yes.” (Terrible pun entirely intended.) We Rush/Yes fans weathered about a month of “will he/won’t he” speculation, where Jon Anderson, sweet little elf that he is, appeared to let the cat out of the bag about the Gedster playing bass on the Fragile track “Roundabout.” With Squire’s passing in June 2015, too, an idea began to float around my head. Ergo, Alex and Geddy would once again play together. Having seen the ceremony in 2013 where Rush finally (FINALLY) got inducted, I knew there would be an all-star jam at the end of the night where all the musicians would play one song together, on one stage. In some capacity, we all knew it was coming even drummer and lyricist Neil Peart said it himself in their song “Dreamline”: “We’re only immortal for a limited time.” So when it was announced that not only was Yes (another favorite band of mine) getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that Alex and Geddy would have the honors of doing so, I felt elated. I, and thousands of other Rush fans, watched the trio deal with such age-related matters such as arthritis, tendinitis, and strained vocal chords and face them on their own terms, retiring from touring The all-star jam to “Rockin’ in the Free World”Īfter a 35-show run on their R40 Live Tour back in summer 2015. Part of my soul healed while I watched these venerable gentlemen at the Barclays Center last Friday night.Ĭall me dramatic, but I must be honest about how I feel. Lee, bassist of Rush, assuming the responsibility of the late Chris Squire and performing Yes’ seminal opus “Roundabout” after inducting the godfathers of prog into the Rock Hall. It was a legendary night for many reasons but for this Rush fangirl, this has to be said first: not only did I see Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee perform onstage together for the first time since August 1st, 2015- I also witnessed perhaps an even bigger event: Mr. I had the privilege of attending the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Brooklyn last week.
